YHA Skiddaw is a remote mountain hostel ; 3.5 miles from the nearest road and only accessible on foot or by mountain bike! Situated at 470m altitude, on the flanks of Skiddaw, this former shooting lodge offers simple but comfortable bunkhouse accommodation.
Stay here for a real escape from it all; with no mains electricity, phone signal, TV or internet to distract from the surrounding wilderness.
The building is off-grid, with solar-generated electricity and no mobile signal, internet, or plug sockets. Heat is provided by wood and coal stoves, however there is no heating in the bedrooms. The managers live onsite and will manage the electricity/stoves during your stay.
The hostel has a cosy lounge with cushioned seating and a woodburning stove. There's also a piano, dartboard and board games to keep you occupied. There are 22 beds arranged in 1x4, 2x5 and 1x8 bedrooms. All bedding is provided and towels are available to hire.
The combined common room and kitchen has a large dining table with bench seating, a domestic oven and three stand-alone hobs with 12 rings. Pots and pans, crockery, utensils and tea towels are provided.
There are two showers and four toilets, with reliable hot water from a gas boiler. Towels are available to hire.
There are wood/coal stoves in the lounge and common room to cuddle up around. There is no heating in the bedrooms, but extra blankets and hot water bottles are available. During cold winter- weather you should consider bringing sleeping bags.
Food and Drink
The hostel has a bar selling a range of wines, spirits and local beers. There is a small shop selling tinned and dried goods. Food for breakfast and packed lunches can be provided, for you to make yourself.

It is situated 470 metres above sea level and during the winter the paths to the hostel are often covered in snow and ice. The main access points are from Threlkeld, Keswick (Latrigg), Peterhouse Farm, and Mosedale. You should refer to a map to find these routes. Please contact the hostel managers if you would like route-planning advice.
Car parking (free) is available at the main access points listed above. If snow is forecast you should park in Keswick. Contact the hostel managers for advice.

How to find us

The main access points are from Threlkeld, Keswick (Latrigg), Peterhouse Farm, and Mosedale. You should refer to a map to find these routes. Please contact the hostel managers if you would like route-planning advice. The nearest services are all in Keswick, a 5 mile walk away. Arriving by bus: Stagecoach; 0871 200 22 33 (Traveline). Bus X4 or X5 (Penrith to Workington), alight at Threlkeld or Keswick (both approximately 5 miles away). Arriving by train: Penrith is the nearest station (15 miles away) – from here you can take X4 or X5 bus as above. Windermere station is 24 miles away. From Windermere take the 555 bus to Keswick.
