The duty of care we have to our guests, beneficiaries, staff and partners compels us to progress and open our hostels with caution and careful consideration in the best interests of the charity and those it serves.
For the foreseeable future, YHA Alston will operate on an Exclusive Hire basis only, with contact-free check in.

YHA Alston is the perfect accommodation option for cyclists and walkers looking to enjoy the beautiful North Pennines scenery which surrounds the hostel. Ideally located for those tackling the Pennine Way or the Coast to Coast cycle route (the hostel is situated on both routes), the neighbouring countryside has great walking routes for all to enjoy, whether you are a keen hiker or prefer a more gentle approach.

The self-catering kitchen is located directly next to the dining room making it convenient for cooking for families/groups. The kitchen contains two domestic gas cookers, two large fridge freezers, two toasters, one kettle, and plenty of kitchen utensils, cutlery, and crockery for guests to use. Tea towels, bin bags, washing up liquid and soap are provided.
Dining room and lounge
The dining room can seat up to 30 people (although 24 is a more comfortable number) and has a large bay window that overlooks the Pennine way, trees full of birds and wildlife and the River South Tyne down the bank below. The dining room leads into the lounge area, down 2 steps, with big comfortable sofas, books and magazines and has lots of board games and children’s toys available for guests. The open plan layout makes the dining room and lounge and great place for socialising. It has a home from home feeling. Highchairs are also available.

YHA Alston includes 30 beds:
Two two-bedded rooms. Includes 1 set of bunk beds. With shared bathroom facilities.
Two four-bedded rooms. Includes 2 sets of bunk beds. With shared bathroom facilities.
Three six-bedded rooms. Includes 3 sets of bunk beds. With shared bathroom facilities.
All bedlinen is provided.
There are 4 showers and 5 toilets close to the bedrooms. Soap is available with every sink. Toilet paper is also provided.
The C2C and The Great North Trail cycle routes pass through Alston, which is perfect for exploring the area on two wheels. YHA Alston has asSecure indoor cycle storage for up to 23 bikes (with overflow available).

The iconic Pennine Way passes through some of the most stunning and idyllic countryside England has to offer. This section boasts the highest waterfall in England, so make sure to keep your eye out.

Check-in and Check-out times
On the day of arrival, the Hostel is available from 4.00pm. On the day of departure you are asked to vacate by 10am.
The town of Alston sits 1000ft above sea level! The cobbled streets have much to offer, including independent shops, cafes and restaurants, interesting history and culture, and picturesque views of the North Pennines.
There are plenty of family friendly attractions, including, the Hub Heritage and Transport Museum, Nenthead Mines, and the Cow Green Reservoir, perfect for exploring. There is a large playing field within walking distance of the hostel and a children’s playground at the top of the town. Whatever you choose to do during your visit to Alston, you certainly will not be disappointed.
The hostel car park is directly in front of the hostel and has space for approximately 8-9 average sized cars, if parked carefully. Entrance into the car park is possible for minibuses and average sized camper vans. Parking is not allowed on the lane leading to the hostel (for safety reasons) but there is plenty of safe free parking just down the lane adjacent to the local petrol station for any excess vehicles. There is some hard standing for motorbikes. There is no access for large coaches up the lane to the hostel.
YHA Alston is located on the edge of Alston just off the A686 road coming from Penrith or A689 from Carlisle. It is approximately 20 miles from Penrith, 30 miles from Carlisle or 25 miles from Hexham. If coming from Penrith after passing the Welcome to Alston sign and crossing over the bridge take the first turning on the right signposted to the Ruth Lancaster James Memorial hospital. At the top of the short steep road take the right turning down a tree lined track and the hostel is about ¾ of the way down on the right.
