Adhering to Government guidance
For the foreseeable future, YHA Black Sail will operate on an Exclusive Hire basis only. If you are interested in staying before 25th March 2021 for a purpose which you believe is within current government regulations, please contact us on +44 (0)1629 592700 (lines open 10:00 – 15:00 GMT, Monday-Friday) to discuss your requirements. Bookings after 26th March 2021 can be made online as normal.
It is your responsibility to ensure you are aware of the current Government guidance on gatherings in self-catering accommodation. In making a booking with YHA (England & Wales) you are agreeing to adhere to the relevant Government guidance that will apply at the time of your stay. Please bear in mind that the guidance may be different in England and Wales.

YHA Black Sail, our most remote location, is a former shepherds bothy offering simple accommodation with a real mountain hut atmosphere. It stands at the head of the remote Ennerdale Valley, surrounded by some of the highest, most famous Lakeland peaks. The is no Wi-Fi or mobile signal, so it’s great for getting away from it all.
What is great about YHA Black Sail?
Location, location, location!
Surrounded by mighty Lakeland fells including Great Gable, Pillar and Haystacks, Alfred Wainright’s final resting place.
Accessible on foot or cycle only making a stay at YHA Black Sail a real adventure.
There is a compact self-catering kitchen with domestic appliances such as one gas hob, one gas oven with built in grill, one fridge and plenty kitchen utensils, crockery, and cutlery for guests to use. Tea towels, bin bags, washing up liquid and soap are provided.
Dining room and lounge
The small but cosy dining room and lounge area seats 16 and has a solid fuel stove. This area has stunning views of the surrounding fells.

YHA Black Sail includes 16 beds:
Great Gable: An eight-bedded room with bunks and some under-bed storage. There are bespoke oak shutters to keep out the light and make it super cosy.
Kirk Fell: A lovely four-bedded room looking out over the valley towards Looking Stead. Oak shutters have been made to keep out the light and the weather.
Haystacks:A cosy four-bedded room with a velux window to let in plenty of natural light and a bespoke blind to keep out the morning sunshine. This is the room nearest the WCs and looks West towards the glorious sunsets.
All bedlinen is provided.
The WCs and shower are accessed from outside. You will need torches for night-time toilet trips! Soap is available with every sink. Toilet paper is also provided.
Many spectacular fells are accessible straight from the door.
Honister Slate Mine is located over the hill in Buttermere. There is a café, a Via Ferrata, a shop and mine tours available.
The Coast to Coast path goes straight past the hostel for you to take part in.

Check-in and Check-out times
On the day of arrival, the Hostel is available from 4.00pm. On the day of departure you are asked to vacate by 10am.
Location, location, location. Quite simply, that is what YHA Black Sail is all about. Remote and accessible only on foot, it is a unique rural retreat that lovers of the great outdoors can normally only dream about.
Located in a traffic-free valley, it is as tranquil as a stay in the Lakes gets. Those on walking, hiking, and climbing holidays will value the superb access to nearby peaks including Great Gable, Pillar, Red Pike and Steeple. Breakfast, packed lunches, and home-cooked evening meals are available every day to keep you going.
There is no vehicle access to YHA Black Sail. Restrictions on vehicle movements have been made by the landowners who are committed to making the Ennerdale valley as wild as they possibly can – this really is getting away from it all.
The nearest parking is at Bowness car park which is 6 miles away. For Exclusive Hire of YHA Black Sail, all the party must be prepared to walk to and from YHA Black Sail with their belongings for an adventure to remember.
Walking and cycling access only via Bowness Knot in the Ennerdale Valley which is 6 miles away. Also, via Buttermere, which is 6 miles away, Honister which is 4 miles away and Wastwater which is 6 miles away.
YHA Black Sail welcomes up to 4 dogs! Add a dog to your booking at check out and bring your four-legged friend along with you.
At YHA Black Sail we strive to cater for everybody. The hostel has no road access and can only be reached on foot. None of the facilities currently meet modern standards of accessibility. We have:
