For the foreseeable future, YHA Buttermere will operate on an Exclusive Hire basis only, with contact-free check in.

Escape from the summer crowds but still be right near the action with a stay at YHA Buttermere. This property, in a quieter corner of the Lake District, is an undiscovered gem half a mile above the village of Buttermere.
What is great about YHA Buttermere?
Located close to Haystacks, Wainwrights most beloved fell with a commanding view over the whole range. Walks for all occasions and abilities can be planned from here and will never disappoint.
Buttermere and Crummock water are a very short walk from the hostel and have well maintained paths around both. A lovely walk out with the family or a chilled day admiring Lakeland in-between big adventures.
Almost endless variation for exploration and adventure can be had right from the front door of the hostel.
The self-catering kitchen is equipped with ample storage space in cupboards, two cookers, a microwave, a fridge, a freezer, with plenty of pots, pans, crockery, and cutlery available for our guests to use. Tea towels, bin bags, washing up liquid and soap are provided.
Dining room and lounge
The hostel’s dining room comfortably seats 50 people. The lounge has pretty views of the mountains, and seats up to 15 people on sofas and chairs and extra chairs from the dining room can be brought in for a more social feel. Highchairs are also available.
There is a small wooded area to the side of the building which is perfect for exploring.

YHA Buttermere includes 56 beds:
Three-two bedded rooms. Includes 1 set of bunk beds. With sink and shared bathroom facilities.
Four four-bedded rooms. Includes 2 sets of bunk beds. With sink and shared bathroom facilities.
Six six-bedded rooms. Includes 3 sets of bunk beds. With sink and shared bathroom facilities.
One eight-bedded room. Includes 4 sets of bunk beds. With sink and shared bathroom facilities.
All bedlinen is provided.
There are 8 showers and 8 toilets close to the bedrooms. Soap is available with every sink. Toilet paper is also provided.
Fantastic climbing opportunities nearby.
World class hiking and rambling routes throughout the Lake District.
There are many great cycling routes right on the hostel’s doorstep.

Check-in and Check-out times
On the day of arrival, the Hostel is available from 4.00pm. On the day of departure you are asked to vacate by 10am.
Buttermere is one of the quieter locations of the Lake District, perfect for walking holidays and getting away from it all in the stunning scenery.
The tranquil landscape is made up of farms and woodlands surrounding three lakes, all of which provides varied options for walkers and hikers. There are a variety of walking, hiking, and cycling opportunities around Buttermere Lake and the surrounding area. The village is made up of a small, picturesque church, two pubs and a café. It is no wonder so many people see Buttermere as the perfect place to get away from it all.
There is parking on site for 16 cars or 6 minibuses. Additional parking is available close to the hostel, above the village.
Head over Honister Pass from Keswick and the hostel is on the left just past the end of Buttermere. On the B5289.
YHA Buttermere welcomes dogs! Add a dog to your booking at check out and bring your four-legged friend along with you.
At YHA Buttermere we strive to cater for everybody. We have no bedrooms on the ground floor. Unfortunately, none of our bedrooms or washrooms is accessible to modern standards.
