Accommodation

YHA Eyam is a Victorian folly resembling a tiny turreted castle, perched on the hillside above the historic village of Eyam. The house was built in 1887 – the Golden Jubilee year of Queen Victoria and it became a youth hostel in 1972 after several changes in ownership.

The hostel is well-used by groups and families who come to enjoy the beautiful Derbyshire countryside and discover more about the tragic story of the villagers of Eyam who sacrificed themselves to the Plague in the 17th century.

Self-catering kitchen

There is a large self-catering kitchen contains one oven with six hobs, one fridge, two microwaves, two kettles, and all the essential cooking items required for both group and individual catering. A server area leads through to the dining room. Tea towels, bin bags, washing up liquid and soap are provided.

Dining room and lounge

The spacious dining rooms can seat up to 36 and 24 people comfortably. The cosy lounge is well equipped with a variety of board games, Lego, a train set, puzzles and books for the little ones and a selection of books and magazines for adults. The games room has a pool table and vending machines for drinks and snacks in case you get a little peckish. Highchairs are also available.

YHA Eyam includes 56 beds (an additional 4 truckle beds can be used):

Main building

Three six-bedded rooms. Includes 3 sets of bunk beds. With shared bathroom facilities.

Two two-bedded rooms. Includes 1 set of bunk beds. With shared bathroom facilities.

Four four-bedded rooms. Includes 2 sets of bunk beds. With shared bathroom facilities.

One six-bedded room with en-suite. Includes 3 sets of bunk beds.

Coach House

Two two-bedded rooms. Includes 1 set of bunk beds. With shared bathroom facilities.

Two four-bedded rooms. Includes 2 sets of bunk beds. With shared bathroom facilities.

All bedlinen is provided.

Bathrooms

There are 4 showers and 6 toilets close to the bedrooms in the main building and 2 showers and 2 toilets close to the bedrooms in the Coach House. Soap is available with every sink. Toilet paper is also provided.

Activities

Located nearby in the village, the Eyam Museum offers an insight into the heroic and sacrificial actions of the villagers, as they isolated themselves to stop the spread of the plague.

There are numerous climbing opportunities within easy reach of the hostel, including Froggatt Edge and Stoney Middleton.

There is mile upon mile of quiet roads, with their fair share of challenging climbs and descents. Ride to the top of Sir William Hill for 360-degree views of the Peak District.

Check-in and Check-out times

On the day of arrival, the Hostel is available from 4.00pm. On the day of departure you are asked to vacate by 10am.

Location

The village of Eyam is a fantastic tourist destination in the UK, with an array of attractions to visit and things to do throughout the year for all ages and abilities.

The quaint village is well-known for its historic links to the plague, the story of which is exhibited in the Eyam Plague Museum and at a display in the St Lawrence Church, so make sure to visit to find out more about what once was the ‘plague village’. There are numerous outdoor attractions in Eyam, such as the Riley Graves, another touching reminder of the village’s past, or the nearby Stanage Edge, which is a popular spot for hikers and rock climbers. The Peak District National Park is a walker’s paradise, so make sure to go rambling through the valleys and fells during your visit.

Parking

The car park is located by the road at the bottom of the hostel driveway, with space for 15 cars. When dropping off luggage, guests can drive up to the hostel itself.

Directions

Chesterfield – take the A619 (follow signposts for Chatsworth House). At Baslow, take the A623, signposted Manchester. Continue through Calver and Stoney Middleton, then turn right into Eyam village. Take the first left through the village, then turn right, signposted Youth Hostel. YHA Eyam is half a mile up this road on the left-hand side.

YHA Eyam welcomes dogs! Add a dog to your booking at check out and bring your four-legged friend along with you.
