Accommodation

Located on the shores of picturesque Derwentwater, at the head of the magnificent Borrowdale Valley, this is a traditionally built, stone cottage in the grounds of Hawse End Centre. The cottage is situated at the foot of Catbell’s which Alfred Wainwright described as one of his favourites which, “while modest in height, offers splendid views”.

Self-catering kitchen

The small self-catering kitchen contains one domestic sized oven, one microwave, one fridge with freezer compartment, and a range of kitchen utensils, crockery, and cutlery for guests to use during their stay. Tea towels, bin bags, washing up liquid and soap are provided.

Dining room and lounge

There is a kitchen/dining area with folding chairs and tables seating up to 16. There is a separate lounge area which leads onto the patio. The patio area is equipped with picnic tables, a barbeque, with incredible views across the lake. Highchairs are also available.

YHA Hawse End Bunkhouse includes 24 beds:

Four four-bedded rooms. Includes 2 sets of bunk beds. With shared bathroom facilities.

One six-bedded room. Includes 3 sets of bunk beds. With shared bathroom facilities.

One two-bedded room. Includes 1 set of bunk beds. With shared bathroom facilities.

All bedlinen is provided.

Bathrooms

There are 5 washrooms throughout the hostel. Soap is available with every sink. Toilet paper is also provided.

Activities

Explore the rolling fells close to the hostel, and make the most of the stunning landscape, surrounding the area.

Discover the area on two wheels. There are plenty of cycling and mountain biking routes, suitable for all ages and abilities.

Delve into all of the mighty crags, climbing and bouldering in the area.

Check-in and Check-out times

On the day of arrival, the Hostel is available from 4.00pm. On the day of departure you are asked to vacate by 10am.

Location

The hostel is located amongst the Northern Lake District’s mountains and lakes, so visitors are never short of anything to do. Keswick can be reached via road and launch for shopping, cinema, museums, cafés, restaurants and the “Theatre by the Lake”. There is also a pub within walking distance. There is plenty to discover by rambling, cycling or wild swimming, as the area is truly beautiful, with views to capture in your memory.

Parking

There is parking in the grounds for 8 cars.

Directions

From Penrith and the M6 Take Exit 40 and follow A66 follow road signposted for Portinscale, just west of Keswick junction. Follow the road through Portinscale continuing for approx. 3 miles following signs for Hawse End Centre. Pass the Derwentwater Marina and go straight on past two right hand signposts to Ullock and Stair. The turning to the centre is on the left directly opposite the Swinside Lodge Hotel. Follow this drive along to Hawse End Centre, the Cottage is further along the road.

Dogs

Registered guide dogs are welcome at YHA Hawse End Bunkhouse. Unfortunately, pets are not permitted.
