YHA Helvellyn offers great access to the scenic landscapes, perfect for walking holidays. This is also a fantastic location to escape the hustle and bustle of towns and cities for a bit of peace and quiet.
Situated a mile from the nearest village, this hostel is a Lake District rural retreat sitting 900ft above sea level between Thirlmere and Ullswater, north of Ambleside. There are several walking routes, including climbing Helvellyn, and walks around Ullswater.

Located 963ft up the third highest mountain in the country.

There is a large self-catering kitchen well equipped with all the essential kitchen appliances, utensils, crockery, and cutlery that are needed to cook up a perfect storm. Tea towels, bin bags, washing up liquid and soap are provided.
Dining room and lounge
The main social areas at YHA Helvellyn are adjoining and comprise of a bar and dining area. The dining room can seat comfortably 30 people on tables and bench seats and the bar area can seat up to 20 with a mixture of high stools and tables along, with some softer seating and low tables. There is another small seating area which has space for around 10 people and is more suitable for those who want a little more privacy. Due to the location of the hostel, Wi-Fi and mobile phone signal is limited, but it makes it the ideal location for a digital detox. Highchairs are also available.

Four four-bedded rooms. Includes 2 sets of bunk beds. With shared bathroom facilities.
One two-bedded room. Includes 2 single beds. With shared bathroom facilities.
One two-bedded room. Includes 1 set of bunk beds. With shared bathroom facilities.
Seven four-bedded rooms. Includes 2 sets of bunk beds. With shared bathroom facilities.
One eight-bedded room. Includes 4 sets of bunk beds. With shared bathroom facilities.
One six-bedded room. Includes 3 sets of bunk beds. With shared bathroom facilities.
One five-bedded room. Includes 1 double bed with single bunk over and 1 set of bunk beds. With shared bathroom facilities.
One three-bedded room. Includes 1 double bed with single bunk over. With shared bathroom facilities
All bedlinen is provided.
There are 4 showers and toilets close to the bedrooms on the ground floor, and 4 toilets and 2 showers on the first floor for guests to use. Soap is available with every sink. Toilet paper is also provided.
There are plenty of walking opportunities in the Lake District. If you take on a high level walk up Helvellyn you will be rewarded with fantastic views. Low level walks around Ullswater are great for families or those wanting a gentle stroll.

Check-in and Check-out times
On the day of arrival, the Hostel is available from 4.00pm. On the day of departure you are asked to vacate by 10am.
Penrith is the perfect destination to enjoy a large bustling town dotted with traditional shops, pubs, and cafes. The town is with rich architecture as well as the untouched countryside almost surrounding the town. Penrith is a great holiday location for the whole family. Explore Britain’s history at Penrith Castle, take up water sports on Ullswater, or explore the stunning Lake District National Park by foot or bike. The possibilities are endless.
Parking is located next to the hostel and has space for around 20 cars. There is no coach parking at YHA Helvellyn. ANPR is in operation at the hostel and requires registering your car at reception upon arrival.
From the village of Glenridding the hostel is just over a mile and is sign posted. Please do not follow your sat nav. After you pass the ‘Travellers Rest’ pub you should follow the road up and round the right and you will drive past rows of terraced cottages on a very rocky single laned track. Keep on this road to the very end and you will then come to the hostel and car park.
YHA Helvellyn welcomes dogs! Your four-legged friends allowed in the communal bar area. Please let the hostel know to how many will be staying upon booking.
