For the foreseeable future, YHA Idwal Cottage will operate on an Exclusive Hire basis only. If you are interested in staying before 25th March 2021 for a purpose which you believe is within current government regulations, please contact us to discuss your requirements. Bookings after 26th March 2021 can be made online as normal.
It is your responsibility to ensure you are aware of the current government guidance on gatherings in self-catering accommodation. In making a booking with YHA (England & Wales) you are agreeing to adhere to the relevant government guidance that will apply at the time of your stay. YHA Idwal Cottage offers superb Snowdonia accommodation for activity breaks in the Ogwen Valley and is surrounded by all the area’s geographical wonders. YHA’s longest standing hostel, follow in the footsteps of YHA’s founders and relive the walks and scrambles enjoyed by the Merseyside Group in those early years. There is no mobile phone signal here, so it makes the perfect base for a digital detox.
What is great about YHA Idwal Cottage?
A former quarry house in self-contained grounds with small pine woodland.
The hostel is nestled in the truly wild and majestic landscape of the National Park and its looming peaks.
A short walk up from the doorstep to Twll Du, the ‘black hole where the devil cooks.’
There is a large self-catering kitchen for communal cooking with plenty of preparation areas and washing facilities on the ground floor by the entrance. It contains two ovens with six hobs, one fridge, one microwave, one kettle and all the essential cooking items required for guests to use during their stay. Tea towels, bin bags, washing up liquid and soap are provided.
Dining room and lounge
The snug lounge is located on the ground floor with soft armchairs, coffee tables, a wood burning stove, and small selection of books and a pool table for guests to enjoy. There is a large ground floor dining room adjacent to self-catering kitchen with 36 wooden chairs and 9 tables. There are patio doors to front of hostel and the outside benches which guests can use, especially in the warmer months. Highchairs are also available.

YHA Idwal Cottage includes 36 beds:
One four-bedded room with en-suite. Includes 2 sets of bunk beds.
One three-bedded accessible room. Includes 1 double bed with single bunk over. With adjacent accessible bathroom located on the ground floor.
Two four-bedded rooms with en-suite. Includes 2 sets of bunk beds.
Three four-bedded rooms. Includes 2 sets of bunk beds. With shared bathroom facilities.
One one-bedded room. Includes 1 single bed. With shared bathroom facilities.
One six-bedded room. Includes 3 sets of bunk beds. With shared bathroom facilities.
One two-bedded room. Includes 1 set of bunk beds. With shared bathroom facilities.
All bedlinen is provided.
There are 6 showers and 6 toilets close throughout the hostel for guests to use. Soap is available with every sink. Toilet paper is also provided.
Explore the Snowdonia National Park by foot on the endless walking paths, suitable for all abilities.
Visit the National Trust’s Penryhn Castle and discover the slate history of North Wales.
Take a climb on the Idwal Slabs- a great activity for the fearless.
Need to know
Check-in and Check-out times
On the day of arrival, the Hostel is available from 4.00pm. On the day of departure you are asked to vacate by 10am.
YHA Idwal Cottage is in Bangor in North Wales. Even though Bangor has limited attractions and activities, it’s a scenic location with breath-taking views over the Menai Strait. Bangor also serves as an ideal base for exploring the Snowdonia National Park with endless walking and cycling opportunities.
There is a large car park located 100m from the hostel with space for 14 cars.
From Bangor, take the A5 towards Capel Curig. After about 4 miles drive through Bethesda and keep on A5 for another 3 miles and you will reach Llyn Idwal. Turn right here (SNP visitor Centre and Car Park) and the hostel is 100 metres down that road on the left-hand side (parking on right past the SNP carpark).
