Situated at 470m on the northern slopes of Skiddaw, YHA Skiddaw House is one of the highest and most remote hostels in the UK. From this unique location, guests are treated to uninterrupted mountain views, with neither a road nor any other building in sight. It is only accessible on foot or by mountain bike; the nearest road is 3 miles away. Originally built in the 1800’s as a grouse-shooting lodge, the hostel now provides simple but comfortable accommodation.
Stay here for a real escape from it all, with no mains electricity, phone signal, TV or internet to distract from the surrounding wilderness. The hostel is currently available for exclusive hire by small groups, ideally suited to a small group of friends or a family.
What is great about YHA Skiddaw Bunkhouse?

The large common room combines lounge, dining room and self-catering kitchen. It has a traditional 19th century range with wood burning stove and comfy seating. There is a ‘scullery’ room for washing up in, which has a small fridge. A highchair is available.
The hostel has a licensed shop selling tinned and packaged ready meals, pasta, rice, muesli, snacks, UHT milk, soft drinks and a range of wines, spirits and local beers. We don’t stock fresh food such as milk, bread, eggs etc. so guests need to carry this in.
