For the foreseeable future, YHA South Downs will operate on an Exclusive Hire basis only. If you are interested in staying for a purpose which you believe is within current government regulations, please contact us to discuss your requirements.
It is your responsibility to ensure you are aware of the current government guidance on gatherings in self-catering accommodation. In making a booking with YHA (England & Wales) you are agreeing to adhere to the relevant government guidance that will apply at the time of your stay. Please bear in mind that the guidance may be different in England and Wales.

Situated on the South Downs Way and just a short walk along the country lanes from Southease Railway Station, YHA South Downs enjoys great access to nearby Lewes, Newhaven and continental Europe via ferry connections, or travel a little further afield to Brighton or London for great days out. Staying a little closer to home, the South Downs National Park is on the hostel doorstep – the world is almost your oyster when staying at YHA South Downs.

There is a self-catering kitchen for communal cooking with plenty of preparation areas and washing facilities. It contains one electric cooker, one fridge, one microwave and all the essential cooking items required for both group and individual catering. Tea towels, bin bags, washing up liquid and soap are provided.
Dining room and lounge
The Farmhouse has a large lounge area with seating for approximately 24 guests and includes a TV and board games for guests to enjoy. There is also a smaller quiet room with seating for 8 people and a stocked bookcase. The Farmhouse dining room has seating for approximately 10 guests and is part of the self-catering kitchen. Highchairs are also available.
YHA South Downs has large open gardens with seating areas for guests to use, especially in the warmer months.

YHA South Downs Farmhouse includes 28 beds:
One six-bedded room with en-suite. Includes 3 sets of bunk beds.
One eight-bedded room. Includes 4 sets of bunk beds. With sink and shared bathroom facilities.
One four-bedded room with en-suite. Includes 2 sets of bunk beds.
One six-bedded room with en-suite. Includes 2 sets of bunk beds and 1 double bed.
One four bedded room. Includes 2 sets of bunk beds. With sink and shared bathroom facilities.
All bedlinen is provided.
The non en-suite rooms have allocated shared bathroom facilities to use during their stay. Soap is available with every sink. Toilet paper is also provided.
YHA South Downs is right on the South Downs Way, with many walking opportunities for visitors to enjoy.
Various water sports are available from Newhaven Marina or from Piddinghoe Pond, both a short distance from YHA South Downs.
Take a journey back in time, Bluebell Railway is a heritage steam railway that runs through the wonderful Sussex countryside – a great day out for all the family.
Need to know
The South Downs National Park is home to the South Downs Chalk Hills, a stretch of hills extending 260 square miles across the coast. It is the ideal place for our next holiday, with plenty to see and do.
If you prefer your adventures on the water, the South Downs runs along many coastlines, including Brighton Beach, home to the famous Brighton Palace Pier and lively nightlife. Or take the little ones on a trip to Drusilla’s Zoo Park, or SEALIFE Brighton, to get up close with a variety of animals.
Brighton is a 25-minute train journey away too, with Southease station a short distance from YHA South Down’s doorstep, meaning visitors can easily enjoy both the city and countryside lifestyle. Make YHA South Downs your chosen holiday location today.
The hostel has space for 20 cars in the lower car park situated 25 meters from the main building and space for 10 cars near the café. We have space for a large coach suitable for group visits.
From Newhaven take the A26 towards Lewes, the turn off to the hostel is signposted and the entrance is on the left off the main road.
From Lewes take the A26 towards Newhaven, the turn off to the hostel is signposted and the entrance is on the right off the main road.
At YHA South Downs we strive to cater for everybody. Our bedrooms are on the first floor. However, we have one accessible bedroom on the ground floor of The Barn (a separate building) with accessible en-suite bathroom. If you let us know in advance, we will be happy to make this room available. We also have:
